Sister of deceased Israeli soldier slams Wikipedia editors for deleting her brother’s page

Controversy erupted after editors of the Hebrew Wikipedia site on Tuesday deleted a page about an Israeli border policeman who was killed in August 2021 by a Palestinian sniper on the Gaza border, the soldier’s sister deceased saying the decision made the family’s grief worse.

Staff Sergeant Barel Hadaria Shmueli was seriously injured on August 21, 2021 after being shot in the head by Palestinian gunfire. He died nine days later.

Israeli Public Broadcaster Can reported that an entry on Shmueli was deleted following a week-long vote, in which 47 editors supported the deletion, while 35 opposed it.

A statement on the deleted page reads: “Wikipedia and its editors respect every person, and that is why principles of encyclopedic importance for people have been defined, among which the special and separate relationship with IDF soldiers . It should be remembered that there are many important sites, official and unofficial, which deal with the commemoration of the dead of the IDF. … For example, Sergeant Barel Hadaria Shmueli’s memorial page on the Yizkor page” — a reference to the Israeli government’s official memorial site for fallen IDF soldiers.

Hila Rahimi, Shmueli’s sister, wrote on Facebook following the deletion: “I thought it couldn’t be more painful. Since Barel was killed, I felt, the whole family felt, pains in all the organs of the body, like a fire. … A hero of Israel, a warrior who risked his life time and time again, who was willing to die for the state, is there more of a national symbol than that?

“We are in deep mourning, a terrible feeling that we experience every day, every minute. Barel has been taken from us. Removed from us, ”she wrote. “I don’t know who makes these decisions, but whoever voted to erase his memory, the only thing we have left is to know that he spat in our faces.”

A user who voted to remove the page wrote, “Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a memorial site. It is not possible to write about every soldier or civilian killed.

Another user said, “Thousands of IDF soldiers have been killed in combat operations. I see no justification for writing an entry on this particular case.

A user who opposed the deletion noted that Shmueli’s death had drawn significant attention in Israel due to controversy over how the incident could have happened and what was widely believed to be fakes. not by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who had recently taken office, in his contacts with Shmueli’s family.
