Just a week after teasing his existence, Pharrell released his collaborative track with Tyler, the Creator and 21 Savage.
The song, titled “Cash in Cash Out”, is the latest in a long line of collaborations between Pharrell and Tyler. The duo previously joined forces on “IFHY,” a track from Tyler’s 2013 album Wolfand teamed up again in 2016 on Tyler’s third studio album, cherry bomb (“Keep Da O’s”).
Most recently, Pharrell was featured on Tyler’s Call me if you get lost cut “Juggernaut,” before bonding with the rapper this year on “Come On, Let’s Go,” a standout song from NIGO’s second studio album I know NIGO!
Meanwhile, “Cash in Cash Out” serves as the first collaboration between Pharrell and 21 Savage, arriving several months after the Atlanta rapper anointed the super-producer as the “King of Drip” on Twitter.
Interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Pharrell explained how he landed on Tyler and 21 as his collaborators. “I knew the track was aggressive, and it doesn’t let up. So it’s like it’s both. It’s like letting go of two pit bulls. Voracious. Two ravenous wolves… Tyler has gone mad. He had done this verse before he released his last album,” he said.
Adding that Savage “got so crazy,” the multi-hyphen continued, “It’s always been the driving force behind my curiosity to work with someone, how do I push it? Because wherever I push them, it takes me. I love chasing that people because it takes us far. You know what it is? [21 has] had his point of view on things. We’ll talk shit or whatever, but then he’ll go straight into the cabin and get into his zone when he finds those amazing pockets, and he’ll just stay in character. It’s great to watch. He is one of my favourites.
In the clip, Pharrell told Lowe, “We knew we wanted something different and exciting, something I’ve never really done before. … If I can’t put a blowtorch on your face, what do I? I mean, Scorsese doesn’t play. Why should I?”
Following the release of their new track, Pharrell will be hosting their Something in the Water festival June 17-19 in Washington, DC. The festival, which will be streamed live via Amazon Music, will include performances by Clipse, Justin Timberlake, SZA, NORE, Q-Tip, Tyler, The Creator, Calvin Harris, Pusha-T, Lil Uzi Vert, Run the Jewels, Usher , 21 Savage, Mariah the Scientist, Rae Sremmurd and many more.
