How to Get Dark Smithing Stone 8 & 9 in Elden Ring

Like many other things in Elden Ring, you will be able to find Somber Smithing Stones 8 and 9 by exploring The Lands Between. Here are some of the locations that will produce these rare materials:

Dark Smithing Stone 8 Locations

These can be found in the Mountaintop of the Giants area:

  • Forge of the Giants
Head to the base of the forge and defeat the giant, teleporting teardrop beetle in the area to get one.
  • Ancient Ruins of the Snow Valley
Near the bottom of the valley is another teardrop beetle. Just head south of Grace’s site and take him out for your prize.
  • Consecrated Snowfield Miner Erdtree
Head west from the tree to find another teardrop beetle resting on some rocks.

Dark Smithing Stone 9 Locations

These can be found in the Crumbling Farum Azula area:

  • Crumbling Beast Grave Depths Site of Grace
Use the elevator to the southwest and arrive on a corpse containing this precious material.
  • dragon temple
First, before making the jump to the temple itself, you’ll find a Somber Smithing Stone 9 in ruins with a tilted pillar. Second, the other is at the lowest level. Head west from Grace’s site and follow the floating stones down and through a tomb for your reward.
A third stone can be found by going through the north exit and turning left on the path. Continue down the hall to find a curved staircase. Climb up and you’ll find a corpse behind a pillar holding a stone.

While exploration and enemy drops can yield these upgrade materials, the most reliable way to obtain them will be via Twin Maiden Husks at the Round Table. This means getting your hands on the matching Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings.

Darkstone Miner’s Bell Carrying 4

Head to the Crumbling Farum Azula, and more specifically to the Balcony Grace Site Facing the Storm. Directly ahead will be a corpse holding the Bell Bearing. This will allow you to purchase both Somber Stone 7 and 8 from the vendor.

Darkstone Mining Bell Carrying 5

In the same area, you will need to progress to Grace’s site on the roof of the Dragon Temple. Continue along the path and when you are near the dragon, head to the right and eliminate the enemies in the area. There’s a fallen temple that connects two cliffs here, so cross. At the bottom is a chapel where enemies are waiting to ambush you, destroy them and get your reward at the corpse near the coffin.

This will give you access to Somber Stone 9 at the Twin Maiden Husks.

What are Dark Forge Stones for in Elden Ring

Both materials are rare and special forging stones that can be used to boost special armaments to a higher level with better stats.

Once you have enough in your inventory, head to a blacksmith and use the Dark Forge Stone to get your special armaments to the desired level. Of course, +9 isn’t the highest level, with a Dark Elder Dragon Forging Stone required to reach +10. These are much harder to find as they cannot be purchased and will require multiple playthroughs if you want to max out all of your special armaments.
